A mental health crisis occurs when an individual is experiencing a difficult situation or event that exceeds their ability to tolerate and cope effectively.

When to make a mental health crisis call:

  • Suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors
  • Increased depression
  • Life stressors that are decreasing mental health function
  • Parent & child conflict
  • Overwhelmed and at a loss of what to do
  • Severe anxiety or panic attacks
  • Out of control behavior that does not require physical intervention
  • Difficulties with unexpected loss
    • Telephone crisis intervention
    • Mobile on-site response to assess and stabilize an immediate crisis (*In-person response time can vary based on geographical location)
    • Mental health crisis consultation to community providers and law enforcement
    • Assessment of risk of harm to self or others
    • Individual & family mental health crisis intervention
    • Short-term stabilization services
    • Coordination of psychiatric hospitalization
    • Recommendation for ongoing care
  • A mental health provider will determine if the issue can be helped over the phone, through telehealth, or face-to-face interaction.

  • In order to prevent the risk of relapse, there are a variety of intervention activities clients can do by themselves or with the help of a mental health provider. These include, but are not limited to:

    • Learning healthy coping skills
    • Developing a safety plan
    • Increasing social supports
    • Making referrals to medication management
    • Going for walks
    • Listening to music
    • Practicing breathing techniques
    • Help the client cope with immediate stressors and lessen his/her suffering
    • Identify and use available resources and strengths
    • Avoid unnecessary hospitalization and loss of independent living
    • Develop action plans and return to his/her baseline level of function
  • Individualized mental health services provided to the client following crisis intervention services. These services may be provided in:

    • The client's home
    • Home of a family member
    • Hospital
    • School
    • Other community locations as needed
